Felt Tip Stories

I am soon starting my MA in Children's Book Illustration and couldn't be more excited about it!

I am also expanding my business in running children's workshops and calling it "Felt Tip Stories", thus putting the emphasis on teaching and facilitating drawing and comic-making activities. I hope this felt tip elephant will find its feet!

The next "Felt Tip Stories" workshop I am running will be "Magical Beast Masks" at the East Street summer fair, which I have not been to before. It looks nice though and I am happy to be helping out! Come along and  make a mask using different drawing marks and felt tips and think of a name and home for your imaginary beast! Free and all ages welcome.Sat 19th Sept. 11am-1pm. I think there'll be some nice food and vintage clothes at this community market. So that'll be jolly!

making huuuuge sculptures

Thanks to the Children's Scrapstore in Bristol for the amazing materials. These images are of another workshop I devised, resourced, led and facilitated at Arnolfini. The children were inspired by large scale images of sculptures and installations by Angus Fairhurst and Cosima Von Bonin from Arnolfini's archive.

Story Ideas

Green Melodica

I helped to record some music by Matt Jones with himself, Sam, Lisa and Michal one sunny day recently in Ashton Court. Mostly I drew them but I also played the melodica for a bit!

Michal wandering, as instructed.

of late...Arnolfini

Hello! I have been leading workshops and making an activity sheet for a project called Arnolfini Story which celebrates the heritage of this contemporary arts centre in Bristol.

At the workshops children drew, explored contemporary sculpture and made a giant octopus a little like Cosima Von Bonin's from her exhibition in 2012.

Apparently one child could remember when the building was once attacked by dinosaurs. I must say, that occasion has slipped my mind.

The next free drop in workshop will include some graffitiing activities and more junk-modelling on 25th July at Arnolfini Saturday 25th July, all ages welcome!

As members of Brolly Lolly Daisy Hirst and I will be running a mask-making workhop at ELCAF called Masks of The Cloud Beasts on Sunday 21st June!  Read all about it HERE.

Sandcastle, snail...

I was commissioned by Tobacco Factory Cafe to make their June 2015 Play Factory activity sheet. Here are the final results!

I have also been in residence at RWA for DRAWN, working on a story
for this character who will at some point appear in a zine.

We Are family day at Arnolfini.

Last Saturday I devised and led a workshop alongside The Children's Scrapstore at Arnolfini.

The children were exploring sound and coming up with ways to represent sound visually.

For instance, they made some SOUND CREATURES!

drew to the Beach Boys

made  sound words...

played some highly amusing describing and drawing games

and made, then named musical instruments.

The workshop was linked to the current exhibition at Arnolfini, on until the 5th May, by Christine Sun Kim.

My studio

is where I draw and paint stories

and stick some of my drawings up with safety pins to remind me of what stories I am thinking about.

It's actually in my house.

Sam makes music at the other end of the room where there are lots of wires and keyboards and strange inventions.

He is not naked in this picture, it's just that I didn't shade in his sweater.

These are some newish characters. I have made a little book about them which I am selling at TCAF and ELCAF and hopefully other fairs this year.

I am still buzzing like a bee from meeting lots of small presses and bookmakers at The Bristol Artists Book Event this weekend. I showed the dunmy book for Right At Home to some people too so that was exciting and useful.

Feast your eyes on my purchases from the inspirational Ed Boxall and the magical Antic- Ham of Red Fox Press.

I also got interviewed by a new Bristol-based  blog called Editions. The article compares some different ways three Bristol-based illustrators use their sketchbooks to start projects.

I led a mono-printing and junk-modelling workshop on the theme of totempoles recently at the Thali cafe in Southville, Bristol as guest artist for Let's Make Art.

It was a beautiful day  and the workshop was so successful I can hardly wait for the next one (and the next one after that).

Perhaps next will be robots!
